Overview
- Malama is a fully HIPAA compliant, remote monitoring app for pregnant individuals with diabetes that reduces administrative burden while improving patient engagement
- Similar interventions ex-U.S. have shown a 16% decrease in transition to pharmacological treatment, a 42% reduction in C-section rates, a 64% reduction in preterm birth rates and a 31% increase in compliance of blood glucose monitoring (Mackillop et al. JMIR 2018)
- Malama is available on Google/iOS and makes it easy for patients to seamlessly track blood glucose values (bluetooth syncing with glucometers), capture meals, view trends (% in range, # of readings out of range), and share beautifully designed, quick reports with providers
- The app also includes educational content available in English and Spanish sourced from the CDPH’s Sweet Success Program, with customizable modules upon request (e.g., clinic-specific nutrition education resources)
- The provider dashboard enables remote patient monitoring, with optional EHR integration available upon request (timeline ~6 months, completed through a HIPAA compliant, SOC 2 audited, third-party vendor)
Who We Are
We are a team of Stanford graduates and researchers who have developed an app to remotely monitor glucose levels during pregnancy.
We started working on this solution after Malama’s co-founder and CEO was diagnosed gestational diabetes in her first pregnancy and was handed a piece of paper to log glucose levels and meals at least 4x a day. We knew that there must be a better way to manage diabetes in pregnancy that will lead to better outcomes and reduced burden for patients and providers alike.
Our Mission
Our goals are threefold:
-
Reduce administrative burden for providers by automating parts of management
-
Remotely identify patients who need more follow-up to improve clinical outcomes
-
Improve patient engagement and compliance by creating a delightful patient experience
Here’s how it works:
- When patients are diagnosed, hand them a Malama post card with information including a QR code they can scan using the phone camera. Our app is available as “Malama Health” on Google Play and Iphone Store for both Android and iOS devices. The app has an easy onboarding process as well as educational information in both English and Spanish
- Patients begin by syncing their glucometer via bluetooth. We currently support bluetooth integration with the two most popular glucometers in the medicaid formulary: ContourNext and Onetouch. If patients have another brand, they can log values manually.
